Steven Benner, Ph.D.

Bio

Dr. Steven Benner is an award-winning biochemist who has published hundreds of research papers in the fields of chemistry and synthetic biology.


He earned his master's degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard.  Dr. Benner was also a professor at Harvard University, ETH Zurich, and most recently at the University of Florida.


He's founded multiple companies, including The Westheimer Institute of Science and Technology, EraGen Biosciences and Firebird BioMolecular Sciences.


Throughout his career, he initiated synthetic biology as a field, invented dynamic combinatorial chemistry, established paleomolecular biology, and helped found evolutionary bioinformatics.


He now works at the Foundation For Applied Molecular Evolution in Alachua, Florida.
